The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) Project Impact Spring Break initiative is a nationwide effort that brings people together in local Project Impact communities to engage in various prevention and damage reduction service projects.
Started in 1998, the Project Impact Spring Break initiative is an opportunity for high school and college/university students to provide community service in support of disaster resistance. During the students' breaks they work within local Project Impact communities to participate in specific projects that will demonstrate and build disaster resistance.
Over the past two years, Project Impact communities have hosted Spring Break events across the country. Activities have included stream clean up, installation of hurricane shutters and general mitigation work for elderly and low-income housing.
Business support for the initiative has been overwhelming with corporate sponsors donating time and materials to help complete Spring Break projects. Media assistance with this partnership approach has been consistently strong, and served as a valuable opportunity to reinforce local Project Impact goals with the general public.
